Texas Starts with Practice 1 Tonight

The first practice at Texas Motor Speedway is this evening from 8-10 EDT. The practice is live streamed on NBC Gold.

Cars will test two tire compounds this evening to determine which tire will be used in the race.

My full preview will get up tomorrow. Here us the spotter’s guide for Texas.

  1. Good move by TMS and Indycar to move practice 1 to Thursday night after the Truck series’ many practices, giving the teams and drivers a lot more time in evening race-like conditions than the longstanding Friday mid-day practice 1. Alas, I am not able to be at the track until tomorrow and I always look forward to races where I can catch all of IndyCar’s on-track activity. Maybe next year. Still, can’t complain about catching two days of on-track action.

While it doesn’t help the Autogeek logo pop, Carpenter’s car looks good in red. It is going to be hard to get used to Rossi in green and white this weekend, though.

Pointless trivia for this race: with three Americans stepping into cars that were piloted by non-Americans last week in Detroit (Daly for Chilton, Kimball for O’Ward, and Ed C for Ed J), 12 of 22 drivers on the entry list are American (55%). This is the highest percentage of Americans in an Indycar field since the 2007 Indy 500 (61%, 20 of 33) and the first time 50% or more of an Indycar field has been American since the late 2007 Detroit race (50%, 9 of 18). This year’s Indy 500 also saw the largest number of Americans in the 500 field since that 2007 race as well, with 15.
