No Toronto Replacement; Schedule Stays at 16 Races

The signs were there, and today it is official. The Toronto Honda Indy, originally scheduled for July 11, but cancelled in May due to COVID-19 restrictions in Ontario, will not be replaced on the 2021 schedule.

Mid Ohio and World Wide Technology raceway were two tracks considered to host a second race to make up for the loss of the Toronto race. Each venue had some advantages, but a combination of factors probably led to the decision to stick with the original schedule.

The series decided that a double header would not offer the promoter a good return on their investment. Finding a suitable television slot may also have played a role in the decision.

I think it was a good decision. While I would have liked to see another oval added to the schedule, adding a race that late in the season is a big ask for teams, especially those fighting for the championship. Drivers more than 50 points behind leader Alex Palou have an even tougher task trying to catch him now.
