Blomqvist Makes Indycar Debut Sunday; Pagenaud Not Cleared to Drive

Simon Pagenaud will miss his second consecutive race recovery from his accident at Mid Ohio two weeks ago. Tom Blomqvist, who drives the Meyer Shank GTP car in IMSA, will drive the 60 car in the Honda Indy Toronto.. There is speculation that Blomqvist will join the Indycar team full time in 2024.

Blomqvist won the IMSA event at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park last Sunday.

Blomqvist to Substitute for Pagenaud at Toronto

Fresh from IMSA CTMP victory, Blomqvist drafted in as Pagenaud Continues Mid-Ohio Recovery

Toronto, Ontario (11 July 2023) – When Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) found itself in need of a replacement driver for the injured Simon Pagenaud this weekend in Toronto, the team just walked through the doors of its IMSA program and tabbed another experienced champion to take the wheel.

Two-time defending and reigning Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona winner Tom Blomqvist will make his NTT INDYCAR SERIES debut this weekend, taking the reins of the No. 60 AutoNation / Sirius XM Honda. The move was made necessary Tuesday after the series’ medical staff did not clear Pagenaud to compete this weekend as the Frenchman continues his recovery from the effects of a dramatic barrel-rolling crash that took place in Saturday’s practice at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Blomqvist, who won the 2022 IMSA WeatherTech Championship with Meyer Shank Racing, has run primarily in sports cars and prototypes in the last seven seasons after having started his career in open-wheel racing. Last weekend, Blomqvist claimed pole position at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on his way to victory at the track with co-driver Colin Braun.

The Toronto outing will not be his first on board an INDYCAR SERIES race car, as Blomqvist had an INDYCAR test with MSR in Sebring in October of 2022. The British-born driver came up through the karting ranks and ran four seasons in various Formula 3 series in Europe, scoring 12 wins. He also broke Lewis Hamilton’s record as the youngest champion of the Formula Renault UK series, taking the crown at the age of 16.

His INDYCAR SERIES debut comes in Sunday’s Honda Indy Toronto, as the series battles for the 37th time on the 11-turn, 1.786-mile street course that winds through the city’s Exhibition Place grounds.

This weekend’s MSR lineup features drivers on both ends of the seat time spectrum as the rookie Blomqvist will be joined by veteran Helio Castroneves (No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda) who is looking to reprise previous successes on the course that lies in the shadow of the Princes’ Gate.

Castroneves has five front-row starts to his credit in Toronto, including pole positions in 2000 and 2004. The Brazilian has led laps in seven of his starts in the Ontario city and has finished on the lead lap in each of his last nine INDYCAR starts there.

Sunday’s 85-lap race will air on Peacock on Sunday starting at 1:30 p.m. ET. Qualifying takes place on Saturday, July 15, beginning at 2:45 p.m. with live coverage on Peacock. SiriusXM will also host live race coverage on XM Ch. 160.

IMS Museum Announces $89 Million Campaign for Museum Transformation

The following is from the IMS Museum. This is huge news. A museum remake is long overdue. While it is one of my favorite places at the track, and one of my first things i vist when i return from Florida, it has lagged behind other museums in interactive displays. I will be sad not being able to visit there for 18 months, but I am excited to see the new rendering. I gope visitors can still get close to the winning cars of the past. The story from the IMS Museum:

$89 Million Capital Campaign and Complete Transformation

of the Museum’s Exhibits and Experiences

The Stories Behind the Spectacle Capital Campaign includes

a $20 million grant from Lilly Endowment and $15 million in lead gifts

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum (IMS Museum) announced today the public phase of a $89 million capital campaign – The Stories Behind the Spectacle – to fund a complete transformation of the Museum, its first significant renovation in nearly 40 years.

The new exhibits and experiences will bring to life the Museum’s vision to create a global destination that provides interactive, immersive and diverse Indianapolis 500 storytelling and educational experiences that can be enjoyed by guests of all ages.

A tax-exempt 501(c)(3) not-for-profit and a separate entity from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the IMS Museum is responsible for its own fundraising and revenue generation. Since the capital campaign’s launch in early 2023, the IMS Museum has already achieved 51% of its $89 million goal, with $46 million committed. This includes lead donations of $10 million from Mary and Randy Rogers and $5 million from the Dyson Foundation, in addition to the Lilly Endowment grant described below.

“We are deeply indebted to numerous community and business leaders, Lilly Endowment, Mary and Randy Rogers, Sandi and Scott Borchetta, The Bobby Rahal Family, and Mike Curb for their transformative gifts in support of the IMS Museum’s capital campaign and planned renovations. Their generosity and leadership will help us preserve and share the stories and innovations of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in exciting ways and with new and diverse audiences,” said Robert Dyson, chair of the IMS Museum board of directors. “We hope everyone in central Indiana will join us and be part of The Stories Behind the Spectacle as we re-imagine the incredible stories of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500 – creating new experiences for our visitors to learn more about the traditions, personalities, technology and careers that comprise the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”

$20 million grant from Lilly Endowment will fund new educational initiatives and robust learning programs

A critical part of The Stories Behind the Spectacle campaign is a $20 million grant from Lilly Endowment that will be used to inspire student learning in a dedicated STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) classroom at the IMS Museum that will feature robust educational resources and programs. A portion of the grant – $5 million – is conditioned on a $1-to-$1 match, which is designed to help the IMS Museum galvanize additional support.

“We are grateful to Lilly Endowment for its catalytic gift, which will help students of all ages to engage in a new robust STEAM initiative that provides learning opportunities in the science, math, art and technology fields,” said Joe Hale, president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. “A custom on-site STEAM classroom will be a cornerstone of the new IMS Museum, led by an experienced education professional who will create and deliver original hands-on educational experiences and curriculum that will spark students’ interest and expose them to potential careers in the motorsports industry.”

Museum leaders are working with K-12 and higher education institutions to develop STEAM curricula and they are collaborating with several Indianapolis arts and cultural organizations to strengthen museum programming and reach new audiences.

“For more than a century, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has raised the global profile of Indianapolis and drawn millions of visitors from around the world to enjoy the motor racing experience in Indianapolis,” said Ronni Kloth, Lilly Endowment’s vice president for community development. “The IMS Museum’s vision to transform its building and engage more diverse audiences through enhanced educational offerings holds the promise to drive cultural and economic activity in Indianapolis and the region and advance educational objectives related to science, math, technology and the arts.”

Re-imagined IMS Museum provides visitors unique, immersive exhibits and experiences

When completed, the re-imagined IMS Museum will thrill visitors of all ages with new immersive and dynamic experiences, including:

  • Seven permanent and three rotating galleries.
  • The opportunity to get up close to some of the world’s most unique and valuable racing artifacts on a behind-the-scenes tour.
  • The sensation of being in an IndyCar in a racing simulator.
  • Learning to use the tools and equipment of the racing trade competing in a “pit stop competition.”

IMS Museum members will also have access to new after-hours and backstage events, domestic and international excursions and trips, and other one-of-a-kind experiences.

“The relationship between the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IMS Museum is critical to telling the story of our history, introducing new fans to the racetrack and our races, and helping to keep the Indianapolis Motor Speedway a year-round attraction in central Indiana. From the very beginning, all of us at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IMS Museum board of directors have unanimously and enthusiastically supported the IMS Museum’s vision. The IMS Museum will create an immersive and awe-inspiring environment for visitors to experience the thrill of ‘The Greatest Spectacle in Racing’ in new and unique ways while at the same time celebrating the history and traditions that make this place and, in particular, the Indianapolis 500 unlike anything else on earth,” said J. Douglas Boles, president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IMS Museum board member.

Comprehensive renovation will require temporary Museum closure

Of the $89 million capital campaign total, $64 million is earmarked for the complete transformation of the interior of the IMS Museum building, including new infrastructure and state-of-the-art technology to create the immersive exhibitions and experiences. Part of the second phase of the project will be a new $15 million automobile and equipment restoration facility allowing visitors to tour and see automobile restoration work being done in real-time. The IMS Museum will also dedicate $10 million toward the creation of an endowment, allowing the Museum to acquire additional artifacts that fulfill its mission of celebrating and preserving the history behind the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500.

The closing of the IMS Museum for construction will occur in phases, beginning in October 2023 with the closing of the basement exhibit area. The Museum will completely close to the public in November 2023 and remain closed until April 2025 when the newly renovated IMS Museum will re-open in time for the 109th Running of the Indy 500. During the Museum’s closure, visitors can still enjoy track tours, including the favorite ”Kiss the Bricks” tour. Details will be available on the IMS Museum website later this year.

Mid Season: Ganassi Dominates as Big Four Collects All the Hardware

Some number crunching proves the obvious-Chip Ganassi Racing is dominating the 2023 NTT Indycar Series season. The other teams in the Big Four are not doing badly, although Team Penske is a not so close second.

Alex Palou has won four times, including the last three races, and could win as many as six races this year.

How strong are the Big Four? 26 of the 27 podium spots have gone to the four top teams. Santino ferrucci of A. J. Foyt Racing, wjo finished third in the Indanapolis 500, is the only driver outside of the top four teams to have apodiumin 2023.

Only four drivers not on a Big Four team have top five finishes- Christian Lundgaard has two fourth place results, Callum Ilott, David Malukas, and Ferrucci.

One odd statistic- Team Penske has yet to earn a pole position this year. Will Power, the career leader in poles earned, has not even made the Fast Six. Andretti Autosport has the most poles- 5- but has only one win. The team is fourth in top five finishes.

As much as Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has struggled this season, Christian Lundgaard has a pole and two fourth place finishes, the best among the rest of the field.

Usually the second half of the season belongs tothe front runners. Just five different drivers have won race thgis year. i think we are on a path where eight ifferent winners is optimistic. It has been an abnormal season in the variety of teams finishing in the top positions.

I’m hoping the second half provides some surprises and bit of drama.

Palou Streak Continues; Mid Ohio Win Third in a Row-Quick Thoughts

I am going to save this headline and just change the name of the race each week. Alex Palou’s five second win over Scott Dixon moves Palou one step closer to tying Dixon’s four straight to start the 2020 season.

A. J. Foyt won the first seven races of the 1964 season. I don’t think we need to start discussing that record yet.

Palou’s lead is 110 points over Dixon and 116 points ahead of Josef Newgarden. Palou leads the top five by 127 points. I can’t recall when a driver dominated the field like this in the modern era.

Lundgaard Saves Rahal’s Day

The great weekend for RLL- withdrivers starting second, fifth, and 11th, fizzled in the race. Graham Rahal was in a close battle with Colton Herta for the lead early in the race. Rahal had a fueling issue on his first pit stop and then stalled the car on his second stop. Rahal finished seventh.

Jack Harvey lined up 11th and faded to 18th. Christian Lundgaard came home fourth, salvaging complete disappointment on whqat looked to be a promising day.

Andretti Still Searching for a Complete Weekend

Andretti Autosport won its fifth pole of the season, and also had a river starting third. Colton Herta jumped out to an early lead over Graham Rahal, and Kyle Kirkwood maintained third for a while, but spun as Palou battled him for position.

Herta also had pit issues and served a penalty for a pit speed violation.

Herta finished 11th, and Kirkwood took the checkered flag in 17th.

Daly Returns to Super Sub Role

Conor Daly returned to his role as one of the best substitute drivers, taking ober for Simon Pagenaud, who was not cleared to drive following yesterday’s horrific accident.

Daly started last and moved up to 20th by the end of the race. It was an admirable job considering he was driving what uis usually the Indianapolis 500 car, and had just 30 minutes in the car this morning.

The Event

It was a decent race, better than most at Mid Ohio. There were a lot of position battles and passing in the esses.

Tiday’s crowd was the largest I have seen at Mid Ohio in many years. Every Indycar event this year has seen increased attendance over last year, and not just by a little.

While I enjoyed the race, I think this race is better at 90 laps. The longer distance would allow for an alternate strategy to have a better chance of working. Pato O’Ward tried an undercut today, but the lack of yellows didn’t help him.

Thanks for folowing along this weekend. I will have a wrap up at some point tomorrow,

Rahal Fastest in Warm Up

Grahan Rahal’s great weekend continued this morning as he posted the fast time in this miorning’s warm up for the Honda Indy 200. Rahal ‘s lap of 1:08.4255 was 17hindredths of a second quicker than Scott Dixon.

David malukas was third, devlin DeFrancesco fourth, and Marcus Ericsson rcompleted the top five.

Will Power went into the turn 4 sand trap and caused the only red flag of the session.

Conor Daly, substituting for Simon Pagenaud, was 12th. Pole sitter Colton Herta was sixth fastest.

Kyle Kirkwood completed just five laps and had the slowest speed of the morning.

Daly to Drive for Meyer Shank as Pagenaud Not Cleared to Race

From Meyer Shank Racing:

Conor Daly to Substitute for Pagenaud at Mid-Ohio

From Meyer Shank Racing:

Lexington, Ohio (2 July 2023) – Conor Daly will race the No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda in Sunday’s Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the 2023 Accord Hybrid following a practice incident that has sidelined Simon Pagenaud.

On Saturday, a manufacturer brake failure saw Pagenaud unable to slow for the high-speed Turn 4 during the morning practice session. Pagenaud took quick action to initiate a spin to reduce his speed, leaving the track sideways, but going airborne as the car was caught by the run-off gravel outside the corner. The No. 60 entry made a series of rolls at high speed before coming to a stop against the tire wall. Fast work from the AMR Safety team saw him extricated promptly and safely as he was transported to the on-site INDYCAR medical facility.

Pagenaud was evaluated and released by the NTT INDYCAR SERIES medical team, but required to be signed off per protocol to return to action. A follow up test did not provide the clearance for the 2019 Indianapolis 500 winner to race Mat Mid-Ohio on Sunday.

“First and foremost, I have to speak to the safety of these cars,” said MSR Team Owner, Mike Shank. “To walk away from an accident like that is incredible and we cannot thank everyone at INDYCAR, the AMR INDYCAR safety team and the INDYCAR medical team for everything they did to get Simon out and evaluated as quickly as possible.

“This is obviously not a scenario that we had planned for, but everyone at MSR has pitched in to get our backup car ready for Sunday,” continued Shank. “It’s actually Helio’s Indy 500 car and the one he won the 500 with in 2021. We have to thank Conor for being here and stepping into this, he’s been super great through all of the chaos. Now we will get back on our feet and see what we can do in the race.”

Daly steps into the No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda with plenty of laps under his belt at Mid-Ohio. This will be his eighth NTT INDYCAR SERIES start at Mid-Ohio with his best finish of sixth in his Rookie season in 2016 which followed a run to the front of the field, leading 22 laps and moving up 16 positions.

“Obviously I have to think about Simon, you hate to see someone wreck like that,” said Daly. “The most important thing is to get him as healthy as possible, as soon as possible. This is his car and his group of folks and I am here to do the best job that I can for this team. I’ve known Mike (Shank) for a long time and I’ve tested for his sports car team many years ago. I’ve always had a lot of respect for this organization. It’s an honor to be a part of this group and fill in – we will just do the best job that we can.”

The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio is set for 1:30pm ET on Sunday, July 2nd. MSR driver Helio  Castroneves will start 19th while Daly will start 27th.

Mid Ohio Race Day

Good morning from a wet Mid Ohio. Rain has tapered to sprinkles. @Indycar_Wxman thinks the race will be dry, but we will see. His Latest:

@Indycar_Wxman 46m

Storms made it through #MidOhio overnight and showers are generally ending this morning…this should open up a drying gap into the afternoon and into the #Honda200 race window..we’ll have to watch for redevelopment late afternoon..but timing leans to dry race for now #INDYCAR

Today’s Schedule: All tumes Eaastern

We should know in the next couple of hours if Simon Pagenaud will be cleared to drive. If he is not, Conor Daly will take his place..

I think the winner today comes from the second row, and I don’t think his first name is Alex. I have had a good feeling about Kyle Kirkwood since Friday’s peactice.

An interesting thing about front row starters Colton Herta and Graham Rahal- both teams have made personnel changes since the 500. It’s nice to see the changes pay off so quickly.

Today’s race will get veryn intereting very quickly if it begins dry and rain comes later in the race.

The schedule can be quite fluid on a day with a weather forecast like we have today. I wll post upfates on The Pit Window on Facebook and on @tutorindie on Rwitter. Save some of your 500 tweets for late breaking news.

I’ll be back after warmup with tire selections and a weaqther update.
