Quick Thoughts on Gateway Day 1

Qualifying for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 was cancelled due to weather and the other events scheduled. According to rule, the fieldlines up for Saturday’s race in order of entrant points. Points leader Scott Dixon will start from the pole and Alexander Rossi is also on the front row. I understand this what the rulebook states. I also think there is a better way to set the grid.

Using times from the last practice session before  scheduled qualifying would be fairer to teams and drivers who showed up with a really good setup. At Gateway Motorsports Park, there is no track action until noon tomorrow. A 10 or 10:30 am qualifying round would work. With the closeness of the points race, the field should be allowed to qualify. This situation has potentially cost someone a point in the title chase. There have been two ties for the season championship.

It was odd not seeing the 6 car on track. Robert Wickens was truly missed today.

It appears passing will be difficult in the race. Sebastien Bourdais looked like the only car that could get by others without much difficulty. Rossi also cold pass, but not quite as easily. Track position will be important.

The track has made several improvements which were noticeable. There is more parking on paved lots, the main roadway is three lanes wide, and there are more food vendors on the midway as well as in the infield.  A second area to redeem pit/paddock pass vouchers is on the midway. The real traffic test comes tomorrow night. I heard from someone who went to last month’s truck race that traffic was still an issue then.

The weather made for a disjointed first practice session. It got off to a rocky start when Marco Andretti’s car stalled in turn 2 on the first lap.

Medical Update

Medical Update on Robert Wickens from INDYCAR and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports

Medical Update on Robert Wickens
ALLENTOWN, Pennsylvania (Monday, Aug. 20, 2018) – Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver Robert Wickens continues to be treated at Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest following injuries sustained in the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, Aug. 19. An MRI was instrumental in revealing the most appropriate surgical course and Wickens is undergoing surgery Monday evening for a spinal injury. Further updates will be provided when available.

Quick Thoughts on the ABC Supply 500

A huge thank to Dallara, the AMR Safety Team, Jay Frye, Indycar and anyone else who had a hand in designing this car. It definitely saved a life today. I hope Robert Wickens has a speedy recovery.

It looked like the front aero improvements did not help passing. I’m not sure if it the lack of the final practice, the temperatures, or effects of the accident,  but it seems as if there was no improvement from IMS.

Alexander Rossi continues his meteoric rise to stardom. If anyone can overtake Scott Dixon for the title, he is the one who can do it.

Dixon showed again today why he will be tough to beat for the Astor Cup. He had an amazing drive today for the podium.

Zach Veach had an outstanding weekend. he lead the practice session, sat on the provisional pole until fewer than ten drivers were left to qualify, and had his third straight top ten finish. keep an eye on him next year.

Why did NBC have to replay the accident so many times? I could understand once or twice, but it seemed as if they were showing it over and over. It seemed as if one time they showed the replay followed by the Indycar commercial with Dixon’s accident at the 2017 500.

The repair of the catch fence looked like a shoddy patchwork job that was not up to standards. I’m glad there was not another incident there the rest of the day. The series should have paid more attention to Sebastien Bourdais.

I hope before the race at Gateway Race Control has a long talk with the drivers about starting a race. Power did start correctly, but other drivers got too anxious.

I will have a full race story on Wildfire Sports sometime tomorrow.
