Herta Leads Practice 2; Goes for 3 Straight Poles

Colton Herta lowered the best lap of the weekend to 1:00.5657 to lead the morning practice before qualifying. Herta edged Andretti teammate Kyle Kirkwood by0.0315 seconds. Kirkwood led Friday’s practice as Andretti continues to assert itsel=f on street courses.

When qualifying begibns at 2:50 eastern time this afternoon, Herta will attempt to win his third consecutive pole position.

Felix Rosenqvist brought out the first red flag of the weekend when hit the wall in turn 5 with just a little more than seven minutes to go.

Cars returned to the track to run out the time, but no one got in a clean lap.

Tom Blomqvist improved one second from yesterday.

Qualifying Groups will be up in a bit.

The top 6:

  1. Herta 1:00.5657
  1. Kirkwood 1:00.5972-sec
  2. Ericsson 1:00.6350-sec
  3. Palou 1:00.6802-sec
  4. O’Ward 1:00.7954-sec
  5. Lundgaard 1:00.7366-sec

Kirkwood Continues Andretti Street Dominance

Kyle Kirkwood led practice session 1 at Toronto this afternoon as Andretti Autosport continues its season long mastery of street circuits. The team has two poles and one win this year on the street circuits.

Kirkwood’s fast ;apof 1:00.8075 was just a tick slower than he 2022 fast Friday time of 1:00.6. Teammmate Romain Grosjean was second, 0.05 seconds behind. Colton Herta in a third Andretti car, finished fourth.

F3lix Rosenqvist from Arrow mMcLaren was third fastest. The Arrow mcLaren team showed quickness as Alexander rossi and Rosenqvist both led the session late. Rossi ended seventh, and pato O’ward was just behind in eighth.

Rahal Lettermman Lanigan drivers showed promise early as Christian Lundgaard led the round early, but graham rahal led the team in sixteenth, followed by Lundgaard. jack harvey was 21st.

Tom Blomqvist’s Indycar debut was decent. He was 26th on the chart, two tenths of a second ahead of Santino Ferrucci, 2.9 seconds behind Kirkwood. Blomqvist is subbiing for the imjured simon Pagenaud, who will be reevaluated this weeekkend by Indycar to detrmine if he can race at iowwa next weekend.

Notes

The cars of Will Power and Josef newgarden are hard to tell apart this weekend. Newgarden’s Snap-On livery is very simlar to Power’s verizon scheme.

Rinus VeeKay was taking some odd lines. His path fortunately did not cause an issue, but there were some close calls.

I hope race officials can repair the manhole cover in that dip in the road. That looks unsafe.

Points leader Alex Palou was 12th fastest today.

Honda Indy Toronto Race Preview

Today’ schedule All times eastern

3 pm-4:15 pm Indycar practice

Indycar takes to the streets of Exhibition Place in Toronoto this weekend, startingmwith a 75 minute practice this afternoon. There are some unusual aspects toi the weekend, one of which is the entire weekend, including the race, is exclusively on Peacock.

The 1.7 ile track has had to adjust to a growing area. The pits have shifted to a new spot after a hotel supplanted their original location. The paddock is inside the convention center.

Sunday’s race will be the 37th running of the event at Exhibition Place. Other events have run for more years, but the Canadian race is fast approaching the 40 race mark, which Mid Ohio just achieved and Long Beach has moved past eight years ago.

The Palou Express

Alex Palou has won three straight races. Is the weekend he is finally stopped? Plaou has not finished outside the top five since the opener at St. Pete, and has qualified in the top for everywhere since Long Beach.

Palou has won the last two street races, and the championship is his to lose. I don’t see a dropoff in hismperformance this weekend, but I don’t think he will be on the top of the podium.

He will still have a strong finish, and at least one of his two closest rivals, Scott Dixon or Josef Newgarden, will fall further behind in points.

RLL Momentum

Can Rahal letterman Lanigan Racing continuie its momentum from Mid Ohio? All three drivers,-Graham Rahal, Christiian Lundgaard, and Jack Harvey qualified well, with Rahal on the front row. Lundgaard finished fourth, while Rahal finsihed seventh after some issues in the pits.

I hope Mid Ohio was the springboard for a good second half of the season for this team.

Blomqvist Debut

Tom Blomqvist makes his Indycar debut, replacing Simon Pagenaud, who has not been cleared by Indycar to drive after his incident at Mid Ohio. Blomqvist drives full time for MSR in IMSA. Runor has it that he will replace Helio Castronveve full time i 2024, and Castroneves will move intom his seat in sportscars.

I’m not sure either current MSR driver will be back next season. This team has to get younger quickly. The year has not gone well for them.

Putting It All Together

Like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football, Colton Herta and Pato O’Ward are still looking for their first complete race weekend of 2023. Herta has won two consecutive poles, but hasn’t been able to win. O’Ward has qualified well occasionally, and has had difficult races.

I give Herta the edge this weekedn. Andretti asutopsort has benn verty strong on street courses this year with two poles and a victory.

I’ll b back late this aftyernoon with a practice wrap up story.

Blomqvist Makes Indycar Debut Sunday; Pagenaud Not Cleared to Drive

Simon Pagenaud will miss his second consecutive race recovery from his accident at Mid Ohio two weeks ago. Tom Blomqvist, who drives the Meyer Shank GTP car in IMSA, will drive the 60 car in the Honda Indy Toronto.. There is speculation that Blomqvist will join the Indycar team full time in 2024.

Blomqvist won the IMSA event at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park last Sunday.

The news release from Meyer Shank Racing:

Blomqvist to Substitute for Pagenaud at Toronto

Fresh from IMSA CTMP victory, Blomqvist drafted in as Pagenaud Continues Mid-Ohio Recovery

Toronto, Ontario (11 July 2023) – When Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) found itself in need of a replacement driver for the injured Simon Pagenaud this weekend in Toronto, the team just walked through the doors of its IMSA program and tabbed another experienced champion to take the wheel.

Two-time defending and reigning Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona winner Tom Blomqvist will make his NTT INDYCAR SERIES debut this weekend, taking the reins of the No. 60 AutoNation / Sirius XM Honda. The move was made necessary Tuesday after the series’ medical staff did not clear Pagenaud to compete this weekend as the Frenchman continues his recovery from the effects of a dramatic barrel-rolling crash that took place in Saturday’s practice at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Blomqvist, who won the 2022 IMSA WeatherTech Championship with Meyer Shank Racing, has run primarily in sports cars and prototypes in the last seven seasons after having started his career in open-wheel racing. Last weekend, Blomqvist claimed pole position at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on his way to victory at the track with co-driver Colin Braun.

The Toronto outing will not be his first on board an INDYCAR SERIES race car, as Blomqvist had an INDYCAR test with MSR in Sebring in October of 2022. The British-born driver came up through the karting ranks and ran four seasons in various Formula 3 series in Europe, scoring 12 wins. He also broke Lewis Hamilton’s record as the youngest champion of the Formula Renault UK series, taking the crown at the age of 16.

His INDYCAR SERIES debut comes in Sunday’s Honda Indy Toronto, as the series battles for the 37th time on the 11-turn, 1.786-mile street course that winds through the city’s Exhibition Place grounds.

This weekend’s MSR lineup features drivers on both ends of the seat time spectrum as the rookie Blomqvist will be joined by veteran Helio Castroneves (No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda) who is looking to reprise previous successes on the course that lies in the shadow of the Princes’ Gate.

Castroneves has five front-row starts to his credit in Toronto, including pole positions in 2000 and 2004. The Brazilian has led laps in seven of his starts in the Ontario city and has finished on the lead lap in each of his last nine INDYCAR starts there.

Sunday’s 85-lap race will air on Peacock on Sunday starting at 1:30 p.m. ET. Qualifying takes place on Saturday, July 15, beginning at 2:45 p.m. with live coverage on Peacock. SiriusXM will also host live race coverage on XM Ch. 160.

Meyer Shank Racing Driver Quotes:

Mid Season: Ganassi Dominates as Big Four Collects All the Hardware

Some number crunching proves the obvious-Chip Ganassi Racing is dominating the 2023 NTT Indycar Series season. The other teams in the Big Four are not doing badly, although Team Penske is a not so close second.

Alex Palou has won four times, including the last three races, and could win as many as six races this year.

How strong are the Big Four? 26 of the 27 podium spots have gone to the four top teams. Santino ferrucci of A. J. Foyt Racing, wjo finished third in the Indanapolis 500, is the only driver outside of the top four teams to have apodiumin 2023.

Only four drivers not on a Big Four team have top five finishes- Christian Lundgaard has two fourth place results, Callum Ilott, David Malukas, and Ferrucci.

One odd statistic- Team Penske has yet to earn a pole position this year. Will Power, the career leader in poles earned, has not even made the Fast Six. Andretti Autosport has the most poles- 5- but has only one win. The team is fourth in top five finishes.

As much as Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has struggled this season, Christian Lundgaard has a pole and two fourth place finishes, the best among the rest of the field.

Usually the second half of the season belongs tothe front runners. Just five different drivers have won race thgis year. i think we are on a path where eight ifferent winners is optimistic. It has been an abnormal season in the variety of teams finishing in the top positions.

I’m hoping the second half provides some surprises and bit of drama.

Palou Streak Continues; Mid Ohio Win Third in a Row-Quick Thoughts

I am going to save this headline and just change the name of the race each week. Alex Palou’s five second win over Scott Dixon moves Palou one step closer to tying Dixon’s four straight to start the 2020 season.

A. J. Foyt won the first seven races of the 1964 season. I don’t think we need to start discussing that record yet.

Palou’s lead is 110 points over Dixon and 116 points ahead of Josef Newgarden. Palou leads the top five by 127 points. I can’t recall when a driver dominated the field like this in the modern era.

Lundgaard Saves Rahal’s Day

The great weekend for RLL- withdrivers starting second, fifth, and 11th, fizzled in the race. Graham Rahal was in a close battle with Colton Herta for the lead early in the race. Rahal had a fueling issue on his first pit stop and then stalled the car on his second stop. Rahal finished seventh.

Jack Harvey lined up 11th and faded to 18th. Christian Lundgaard came home fourth, salvaging complete disappointment on whqat looked to be a promising day.

Andretti Still Searching for a Complete Weekend

Andretti Autosport won its fifth pole of the season, and also had a river starting third. Colton Herta jumped out to an early lead over Graham Rahal, and Kyle Kirkwood maintained third for a while, but spun as Palou battled him for position.

Herta also had pit issues and served a penalty for a pit speed violation.

Herta finished 11th, and Kirkwood took the checkered flag in 17th.

Daly Returns to Super Sub Role

Conor Daly returned to his role as one of the best substitute drivers, taking ober for Simon Pagenaud, who was not cleared to drive following yesterday’s horrific accident.

Daly started last and moved up to 20th by the end of the race. It was an admirable job considering he was driving what uis usually the Indianapolis 500 car, and had just 30 minutes in the car this morning.

The Event

It was a decent race, better than most at Mid Ohio. There were a lot of position battles and passing in the esses.

Tiday’s crowd was the largest I have seen at Mid Ohio in many years. Every Indycar event this year has seen increased attendance over last year, and not just by a little.

While I enjoyed the race, I think this race is better at 90 laps. The longer distance would allow for an alternate strategy to have a better chance of working. Pato O’Ward tried an undercut today, but the lack of yellows didn’t help him.

Thanks for folowing along this weekend. I will have a wrap up at some point tomorrow,
