Texas Preview- Can Racing Save the Race?

Fans never know what kind of race they will see at Texas Motor Speedway. There have been spactatcular close duels, leaders crahing near the end of the race, photo finishes, and snozzers. Lots of snoozers.

In 2022 before the final practice, one car from each team except A. J. Foyt Racing, who opted out, ran a brief session on the high line which had been undriveable. The rubber they put down helped during the race. It allowed josef newgarden to pass Scott Mclaughlin comong out of the final corner.

Attendance has been an issue at the track the past several years. Last year’s crowd was quite small. There was much speculation whether the race would be on the 2023 schedule. It is here, and the track seems encouraged by ticket sales. Mclaren driver pato O’Ward has given awayaround 600 tickets through his merchandise store, and he has purchased a suite for some of his sponsors. We will see how full teh stands are on Sunday.

The PPPG 375 ( Sunday, noon Eastern, NBC and Peacock) looks to be a much better race than last year. The series has designated two 15 minute sessions, 14 cars each, to run in the high line and put rubber on the track. No new PJ-1, the sticky substance NASCAR needs for traction in the high groove, has been added since last season. The only issue this year is the Goodyear rubber fromn the truck series race Saturday afternoon. Will that negate the rubbering in?

Indycar has modified the downforce package to allow some team options with gurney flaps and barge boards. The different strategies with these pieces could help make the racing closer.

Scott Dixon said in the pre race tele conference that he believes the racing will be better.

“I think the combination of the additional aero, actually haven’t looked at the weather, I imagine this time of year it’s going to be pretty cold, too, which will help. It’s an early race. I think we’re like 11:00 or 11:30 a.m. local. Those and the high line practice I think. Actually thirdly with the addition of maybe not having a fresh amount of whatever the NASCAR kind of surface stuff is on top will definitely change it as well. All three of those should make, one, the second lane a little more usable, which will definitely tighten up the pack, and ultimately make it a lot more racy for everybody. I think for the drivers you just hope it doesn’t become a pack race. I don’t think it’s going to be that extreme,” the five time winner of Texas said.

Unfinished Business

Arrow McLaren had a strong start to the Texas weelend last year. Felix Rosenqvist won the pole and PatoO’Ward, who won one of the races in 2021, started near the front. Rosenqvist never led a lap and both cars had pit issues. Rosenqvist evenbtually retired with mechanical problems.

Look for this team,with the addition of Alexander rossi, to be very string this weekend. O’Ward will be even hungrier after his near miss of victory at St. Pete.

Saturday’s schedule is quite compact. teams will have to think quickly and adjust on the fly.

In 2022, cars were impounded after qualifying. Teams had to run a race type setup in qualifying. For 2023, changes can be made to the cars in the 30 minutes between the end of qualifying and the beginning of high groove practice. Cars must remain on pit road.

I look for a strong three way battle between Arrow McLaren, Team Penske, and Ganassi. Pato O’Ward will emerge with his second Texas victory.

The good racing I expect may help save the race, but will really help is stronger promotion from the track. I’ve heard there wer some local ads int he last week, but the track sign ade no otion of Indycar being there. I would hate to see this event go away. it is usually fun. This year’s race could be one of the best ones yet.,

“4 THINGS TO LOOK FOR” AT TEXAS:
1. Round and Round We Go: The PPG 375 will be the first of five oval races on the 2023 NTT INDYCAR SERIES schedule as well as the 36th INDYCAR SERIES race on the 1.5-mile oval at Texas Motor Speedway. Only Indianapolis Motor Speedway has hosted more INDYCAR SERIES races among current oval tracks. The 28 drivers entered is the most for a race at Texas since 30 drivers were entered for the Firestone Twin 275s in June 2011. And predicting who will wear the cowboy hat and celebrate in Victory Lane is anyone’s guess. Underscoring the competitiveness of the series, there have been 23 different drivers to win the 35 races. With a wide-open field of competitive drivers and teams, will another new winner find his way to take the checkered flag in the race?
2. Dixon Has Been Dominating: Scott Dixon (No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) is the winningest NTT INDYCAR SERIES driver at Texas Motor Speedway, with five victories, and he has won three of the past six and four of the past nine races there. Dixon has led five of the last six race races, 678 of 1,404 laps in all (48.2 percent). That accounts for him being INDYCAR’s all-time leader in laps led at this oval with 1,043 laps, more than double the number of the active driver in second place. His average finish in all races at TMS is 6.7. But Dixon is not the only active NTT INDYCAR SERIES driver to succeed at TMS. Six other drivers in this field have won at Texas, including Meyer Shank Racing’s Helio Castroneves (No. 06 AutoNation/SiriusXM Honda), who won on four occasions with Team Penske. Team Penske teammates Will Power (No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet) and Josef Newgarden (No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet) each have earned two of Roger Penske’s organization’s record 11 victories at the track. Power won in 2011 and 2017, Newgarden in 2019 and 2022. Ed Carpenter (No. 33 Bitnile.com Chevrolet) won in 2014, Graham Rahal (No. 15 Fleet Cost & Care Honda) won in 2016, and Pato O’Ward (No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet) won the second race of the 2021 doubleheader. The seven previous winners have combined to win 16 of the 35 previous races at TMS.
3. Texas ties: Though reigning NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Will Power is from Toowoomba, Australia, the two-time series champion and two-time Texas winner considers TMS to be a home race because his wife, Elizabeth, is from nearby Plano. Power, who claimed his first INDYCAR SERIES oval win at Texas in 2011, is one of several NTT INDYCAR SERIES personalities with ties to the Lone Star State. Others include: Pato O’Ward won his first INDYCAR SERIES race at Texas in 2021, but the PPG 375 will also be the only race for the Mexican driver in his adopted home state. O’Ward’s family moved to San Antonio when he was 11, and he attended high school there. Santino Ferrucci drives the famed No. 14 car for Lone Star legend A.J. Foyt and aims to deliver Foyt his first oval win since 2002. Can the Sunnyvale resident take the racing legend’s team – run by TCU graduate Larry Foyt – to victory lane in its home state?
4. Ready, Set, Go To $1 Million Bonus: The PeopleReady Force for Good Challenge returns for a second season, and the PPG 375 will be a chance for Marcus Ericsson (No. 8 Huski Chocolate Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) to solidify his chances for the prize. The challenge offered by the industrial staffing giant is a bonus of $1 million to be awarded to the first NTT INDYCAR SERIES driver who can win on all three unique style of tracks – street circuits, road courses and ovals – this season. With last month’s victory in the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding, Ericsson has checked the street circuit box, and the 2022 Indianapolis 500 winner figures to be strong at Texas after finishing third in last year’s NTT INDYCAR SERIES event. One INDYCAR SERIES driver has won on each type of track in seven of the past eight seasons, 2021 being the exception. In 2022, Josef Newgarden earned the reward, which offers $500,000 shared between the driver and his team and $500,000 presented to their chosen charity. PeopleReady is offering an additional $10,000 to the winner of every race this season, also to be split with their selected charity.

Race Notes:
2022 Indianapolis 500 winner Marcus Ericsson kicked off the 2023 season in style, claiming the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 5 on the Streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. The 32-year-old Swede took advantage of a late-race plenum event for Pato O’Ward and held off the Mexican and teammate Scott Dixon to take his fourth career win.

The PPG 375 will be the 36th INDYCAR SERIES race at Texas Motor Speedway, dating to Arie Luyendyk winning the INDYCAR SERIES event in 1997.
No driver has competed in every INDYCAR SERIES race at TMS, but Scott Dixon has started 24 events.

Will Power has won the pole for three of the past 11 Texas Motor Speedway races (2013, 2014 and 2015). Other past pole winners entered this year are Scott Dixon (2008), Josef Newgarden (2018 and 2020),Takuma Sato (2019) and Felix Rosenqvist (2022). Dixon and Alex Palou were awarded the pole based on entrant points after qualifying was rained out in 2021.

Six drivers have won the Texas race from the pole: Sam Hornish Jr. (2001 Race 2), Gil de Ferran (2003 Race 2), Helio Castroneves (2004 Race 2), Tomas Scheckter (2005), Scott Dixon (2008) and Ryan Briscoe (2010).

Drivers who have won at Texas have gone on to win the NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship nine times, including in three of the last five seasons. Champions who won at Texas are Sam Hornish Jr. (2001 Race 2 and 2002 Race 2), Tony Kanaan (2004 Race 1), Scott Dixon (2008, 2015, 2018 and 2020), Dario Franchitti (2011 Race 1) and Josef Newgarden (2019).

Twenty-five drivers entered this weekend have competed in past NTT INDYCAR SERIES events at Texas Motor Speedway.

Three rookies – Agustin Canapino, Benjamin Pedersen and Sting Ray Robb – are entered. All three will attempt to make their first NTT INDYCAR SERIES start on an oval this weekend at Texas. 

Ed Carpenter and Takuma Sato are scheduled to make their 2023 season debut this weekend. Milestones: 

Scott Dixon will attempt to make his 370th INDYCAR SERIES start, which would pass A.J. Foyt for fourth on the all-time list … Dixon will attempt to make his 307th consecutive start, the second-longest streak in INDYCAR SERIES history.

Hy-Vee Names Race Sponsors for Iowa Weekend

Hy-Vee and Iowa Speedway have named race title and presenting sponsors for the Indycar double header at Iowa Speedway July 22 and 23.

Both races will be 250 laps. I’m disappointed. In 2022, Saturday’s race was 250 laps and Sunday’s race was 300 laps. I like the different distances. It caused teams to take a different approach the second day. Now we will see basically the same race two days in a row.

Hy-Vee, Inc. and INDYCAR announced March 22 that the two NTT INDYCAR SERIES 250-lap races during the Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend at Iowa Speedway will be focused on honoring America’s heroes and fighting hunger across the United States. Hy-Vee partners Instacart and Gatorade will support the weekend efforts with each industry-leading company serving as a presenting sponsor of the Saturday and Sunday races.

Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend will be held July 21-23 at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa. Saturday, July 22 will be an all-day salute to United States veterans and military service men and women, culminating with the Hy-Vee Homefront 250 presented by Instacart. The race is named for the company’s longtime initiative that supports veterans and military members. Hy-Vee‘s commitment to veterans and military, and their families, dates back to the early years of Hy-Vee‘s history.

Throughout the day on Saturday at Iowa Speedway, special events, displays and even the music and entertainment featured throughout the venue will honor veterans and pay tribute to military members for their service to our country.

Lundqvist Gets Test with RLL as Harvey Cleared to Race; Series Going South?

Indycar fans got their exercise by jumping to a conclusion about Rahal Letterman Lanigan racing this week. First Jack Harvey, injured in a lap 42 accident at St. Pete, was finally cleared to drive again.

A few days later, the team announced that2022 Indy Lights champion Linus Lundqvist will get an oval test April3 at Texas, the day after the Indycar race there. Lundqvist was caught in a lowering of the champion award money which didn’t give him enough funding to secure an Indycar ride. Rahal said that they will see about entering him in a few races later in the year.

It would be easy to conclude that RLL is preparing a replacement for Jack Harvey at the end of the year. I’m not ready to make that leap yet, but Harvey’s inauspicious start to a make-or-break season certainly adds fuel to that suspicion. The next race at Texas is the one Harvey sat out in 2022 after suffering a concussion in a practice crash.

We will see how this plays out, but I look for a fourth Rahal entry at some races after May. I’m excited to see what Lundqvist can do. meanwhile, Let’s see if Harvey can turn his fortunes around.

Argentina Calling?

Mark Miles went to Argentina to check out a track for a possible Indycar race. Ricardo Juncos has been pushing for the series to race in his home country. In November Juncos held demonstration runs with Augustin Canapino which drew large crowds.

Track designer Tony Cotman accompanied Miles on the trip.

A race in South America needs to make perfect financial sense for the teams, the series, and the schedule. The gap between St. Pete and Texas would be the ideal spot for this race. There is plenty of time for transport back and forth, and it wouldn’t interfere with the rest of the schedule.

While I am not against an Argentina event, I’d rather the series focus on bringing back Milwaukee and adding other tracks in the United States. Indycar badly needs a race in the Northeast.

The footage was first shown this week at the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) conference in Austin, Texas, during a panel discussion with NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers Alexander Rossi and Pato O’Ward and “100 DAYS TO INDY” director Patrick Dimon.

Produced by Penske Entertainment and VICE Media Group, the six-part series will take fans behind the scenes to chronicle the bold and brash personalities of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES as they begin the 2023 season and start their quest for racing’s greatest prize: the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on Sunday, May 28.From the balmy high-speed turns of St. Petersburg, Florida, to the demanding banked oval in Fort Worth, Texas, and the sun-swept streets of Long Beach, California, every mile is an epic moment as “100 DAYS TO INDY” takes viewers into the driver’s seat for unprecedented access to top NTT INDYCAR SERIES stars.

Harvey Not Cleared to Drive; Some Other Notes

Jack Harvey, injured in a crash during the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg March 5, has still not been medically cleared to drive. The driver of the number 30 car for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing will miss today’s team test at Barber Motorsports Park.

The nature of the injury is not known, but I believe it has something to do with his wrists.

Juri Vips, a former F2 driver, will fill in today. Harvey will be reevaluated before the Texas race. In 2022 he missed the Texas race after suffering a concussion in the final practice.

Harvey was rumored to be in a make or break year, and the injury and missing time in the car is not helping his cause. Vips also tested with the team last October.

Albert Whitted Airport Getting Another Look

The airport in St. Petersburg is getting another look by the mayor’s office for a possible conversion to another use. When Ken Welch became mayor two years ago, surveys were conducted to see if the city could make better use of thland. Now, the process is beginning again. One of the runways serves as the front stretch and pits for the Grand Prix.

The race has just extended its agreement with Indycar for two more years. It will take at least that long for any plans to surface, so I wouldn’t be concerned just yet.

I remember the first time this subject came up, something was mentioned about the FAA having a say in the matter. Stay tuned, but for now, we’re still racing in St. Pete.

Indycar Drivers at Sebring

This weekend’s Mobil 12 Hours of Sebring will feature five full time Indycar drivers and a driver entered in the Indianapolis 500. Three of the drivers are from Andretti Autosport- Devlin DeFrancesco in the number 51 LMP 2 car, Kyle Kirkwood in the Vasser-Sullivan Lexus number 14 GTD Pro, and Romain Grosjean in the number 3 Lamborghini, also in GTD Pro.

Scott Dixon will drive the 01 Cadillac GTP for Ganassi, and Helio Castroneves will drive for his Indycar boss, Mike Shank, in the number 60 GTP Acura.

Katherine Legge will drive car 66, an Acura NSX, in the GTD class.
